چکیده

In addition to presenting relevant instructional content to learners in collaborative learning settings, intelligent conversational tutors must be good communicators to keep the students attentive and engaged. In our recent work, we have shown that tutors capable of performing both task-related (tutoring) as well as social behavior are more effective tutors than tutors that perform only task-related behavior. It is also important to consider that collaborative learning tasks in ill-defined domains (like engineering design) require students to negotiate among competing goals. Thus, automated tutors must be capable of supporting students with different roles and potentially competing goals. In this paper, we will describe the most recent implementation of the CycleTalk tutor using the Basilica architecture that demonstrates these social behavior and role supporting capabilities. Also, we briefly discuss results of an experiment using this tutor that optimizes the amount of social behavior in such learning settings.

Socially Capable Conversational Tutors Can Be Effective in Collaborative Learning Situations

Tutorial Dialog has been shown to be effective in supporting both individual as well as group learners. However, unlike the case with individual learners, teams of learners often ignore and abuse the automated tutors. Both theory and empirical work in the area of small-group communication argue that group participants display both task as well as socio-emotional behaviors during interactions. H...

Collaborative Lecturing by Human and Computer Tutors

We implemented and evaluated a collaborative lecture module in an ITS that models the pedagogical and motivational tactics of expert human tutors. Inspired by the lecture delivery styles of the expert tutors, the collaborative lectures of the ITS were conversational and interactive, instead of a polished one-way information delivery from tutor to student. We hypothesized that the enhanced inter...

Coordinating Multi-dimensional Support in Collaborative Conversational Agents

The field of computer supported collaborative learning has evolved an ontology of types of support for group learning. In recent years, conversational agents have been used successfully to realize forms of dynamic micro and macro level script based support for group learning. However, using existing architectures for managing the coordination of these agent-based behaviors (which can vary widel...

Automated Adaptive Support for Peer Tutoring

Collaborative activities have been shown to be beneficial, provided that students exhibit certain positive behaviors. Unfortunately, these behaviors rarely occur spontaneously. Adaptive collaborative learning support (ACLS), where an intelligent system assesses student collaboration as it occurs and provides assistance when necessary, is a promising area of research that can help scaffold stude...

The Use of Weblogs as a Tool to Support Collaborative Learning and Reflective Practice in Third-Level Institutions

Weblogs can be used as a tool for learning support, providing additional features that are lacking in many Learning Management Systems (LMSs). This research aims to demonstrate that weblogs can enhance the learning experience by allowing students to reflect on their learning, and by allowing students to easily collaborate with their tutors and with one another. Laurillard’s conversational frame...
